ohn Foster McCreight was the first Premier of the Province of British Columbia, Canada. He served as Premier from 1871 to 1872. McCreight was born in Ireland and emigrated to Canada in 1849. He practiced law in Toronto before moving to British Columbia in 1858. In British Columbia, he served as a member of the Legislative Council and was appointed as the first Premier of the province after it joined Confederation in 1871. McCreight resigned as Premier in 1872 and returned to private life.

Some of the challenges and issues that he may have faced as Premier include:

  • Building infrastructure and promoting economic development in the young province: British Columbia was a relatively new province at the time that McCreight was Premier, having only joined Confederation in 1871.
